How did you get into Roller Derby?
I was new to Birmingham at the time and needed something to push myself out of my comfort zone of my comfy couch as well as meet new people. I watched the movie “Whip It” with my boyfriend and wanted to join (although now understanding the sport, the movie isn’t super accurate to how the the game is played!). I was nervous to go to recruitment so I brought a friend for moral support. This was my first time on skates in probably over ten years and definitely my first time trying on quad skates. I looked like a giraffe on wheels (I’m 5’11!). I doubted myself a lot (never thought I could be as strong as a derby girl) but the support from the team was so essential in my beginning months. Now, I have found an incredible group of women that values community, strength, and not being afraid to fail. I love it.
What is your most embarrassing roller derby memory?
When I first started derby, I literally stepped out on the track and just fell backwards and completely wiped out. It’s great when you fall for no good reason but your own awkwardness.
What are some of your other hobbies?
Playing with my cat and dog (Luna and Penny!), hiking, kayaking, eating hot Cheetos, exploring.
