Wee Woo

Name:Shelby

Occupation:Education Director for nonprofit

First Appearance:2016

Hometown:Eufaula, AL

Derby Spouse:Windy Torrance

About Woo:

How did you get into Roller Derby?

I was new to Birmingham at the time and needed something to push myself out of my comfort zone of my comfy couch as well as meet new people. I watched the movie “Whip It” with my boyfriend and wanted to join (although now understanding the sport, the movie isn’t super accurate to how the the game is played!). I was nervous to go to recruitment so I brought a friend for moral support. This was my first time on skates in probably over ten years and definitely my first time trying on quad skates. I looked like a giraffe on wheels (I’m 5’11!). I doubted myself a lot (never thought I could be as strong as a derby girl) but the support from the team was so essential in my beginning months. Now, I have found an incredible group of women that values community, strength, and not being afraid to fail. I love it.

What is your most embarrassing roller derby memory?

When I first started derby, I literally stepped out on the track and just fell backwards and completely wiped out. It’s great when you fall for no good reason but your own awkwardness.

What are some of your other hobbies?

Playing with my cat and dog (Luna and Penny!), hiking, kayaking, eating hot Cheetos, exploring.

What 3 fictional characters best describe you?

Eliza Thornberry, May Bird, Nymphadora Tonks

Where do you like to hang out in Birmingham when you are not skating?

About Claw:

How did you get into Roller Derby?

First saw the team in a parade, took me years to join, but one year around my birthday I did. Never looked back!

What is your best roller derby memory?

Really so many! Carpool sing-a-longs, favorite places to eat as we travel to away bouts, traditions we have made, making new friends, all the tournaments (but especially World Cup!) and getting to be more involved with my community here at home! But probably what I am most proud of currently is getting to play derby in France this past November! It was a real honor to play with such talented ladies (most of whom play for their country's all-star league).

What is your most embarrassing roller derby memory?

Also, really so many! Probably one of the most embarrassing is in my first international game ever. Let's just say a girl from Norway (that I thought I was about to lay out) put me on back. It's not really that bad, but it was on live feed for the world to see and can still be found on youtube, with announcer commentary. Can't help but laugh when I see it!

What was your first bout like?

Was against Dixie Derby Girls. One of my favorite (humbling) photo comes from that game: My first home game however was amazing! I was jamming and brought our team up in a 20+ point jam at the end of the game. I always joked that I peaked then.

What are some of your other hobbies?

Who has time for other hobbies? just kidding... kind of. I like to travel, cook/ eat, volunteer in any spare time.

Who are some of your personal Heroes

There are a lot of strong role models currently and in history I admire (and could list!), but I am continually impressed by the everyday heroes I see in this community. And I am so lucky to call some of them my family, friends, and teammates! It is a very rare thing for any one person to achieve greatness on their own.

What 3 fictional characters best describe you?

I was once called the Leslie Knope of Roller Derby, took that as quite the compliment.

What charities or organization(s) are you involved with or support?

I have been proud to work with a number local charities, especially in my years with TCR's and our Sally Slaughter Charity Partner. Very excited to see what this next year brings!

Where do you like to hang out in Birmingham when you are not skating?

Tragic City Rollers has had some many great sponsors throughout the years! Take a look at our website, in my free time you will probably catch me at anyone of them.

What is your best roller derby memory?

My whole career obviously. I've been a part of a lot of great things on and off the track, so it's hard to choose one. Playing in my first game ever and my first All Star game, playing against a Norweign team, representing Team Alabama, roadtrips, playing in a tournament with 7 skaters, mixed scrimmages with other teams, after parties, coaching, being drafted to the Rollsheviks. #rolls4lyfr

What is your most embarrassing roller derby memory?

Ummm, who has those?

What was your first bout like?

First bout was playing on the B Team against Hard Knox. We found out before the game that 9 of their 12 skaters were on the All Stars and would be playing against our All Star team after our game. Not intimidating at all :) To say we lost is an understatement. We learned a lot and had fun. Most importantly, we all survived to play another game and definitely won the after party!

How did you get into Roller Derby?

I was on a plane coming home from Ireland after being out of the country for a year. The movie Whip It was playing and I realized I needed a new hobby. First Appearance:January 2016

About Killa:

How did you get into Roller Derby?

I went to a bout and saw all these strong, athletic women skating around so confidently, and I decided I wanted that. I came up with my name and number while watching that bout in 2015.

What is you best roller derby memory?

The week before my first B team game with the rest of my recruitment class we found out that the "B team" we were playing was actually an A team that had their 2 best jammers and 2 best blockers taken out. We were terrified. On the way there, we saw a sign that said, "Might as well" so we adopted that as our slogan for the day. And forever after, actually.

What is your most embarrassing roller derby memory?

Oh, they happen too often. I get embarrassed all the time. If you're not falling, you're not trying.

What was your first bout like?

We were at an away tournament (I can't even remember where because I was so nervous), and I spent the majority of it on the bench. I'm pretty sure I was just trying to stay upright and with another teammate the entire time. I just didn't want to majorly mess it up for my team.

What are some of your other hobbies?

Drinking all the coffee, reading, and watching tv on my couch

Who are some of your personal Heroes

Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Oprah, Bonnie Thunders

What charities or organization(s) are you involved with or support?

About Slay:

How did you get into Roller Derby?

I legit just showed up. Saw an ad on FB. Had NO clue what I was doing. And literally couldn’t skate to save my life. I pretty much fell in love immediately.

What is your best roller derby memory?

Any time I can avoid getting hit by Suge Fight? 😂😂😂 And maybe that second B team bout when I was jamming and my coach told me how awesome my apex jump was. Had no memory of doing it. Back in the day I was just trying not to die on the track. Sometimes you skate better when you rely on instincts.

What is your most embarrassing roller derby memory?

Ha well...I may have gotten my first insubordination the other day because I didn’t exit the track...just kept skating on it - headed to the penalty box. It’s pretty much one of the first things they teach you when you get a penalty. EXIT the track. Not my proudest moment.

IMG_2715.JPG

What was your first bout like?

My first All-Star bout was amazing. We played in a tournament in ATL. I wanted to prove myself so badly and I was loving every second of it. Then I sprained both my knees in the second bout of the tournament - scorpion style. Wouldn’t change a thing.

What are some of your other hobbies?

What is your best roller derby memory?

The first B-team game of the 2017 season against the Druid City Dames (in their first ever game as a league!) comes to mind. The score was very close the entire game. Both teams played so well but we came out on top by only three points. Many of my family and friends came to watch from out of town so that made it so much sweeter.

Why did you start roller derby?

I showed up at a recruitment on a whim really, just to see what it was about. After seeing the dynamics of the people and the gratification of the workout I was hooked. I can't say enough good things about the people and the automatic team atmosphere whether you've been skating a while, or it's been 15 years since you put on skates, you are accepted as a person and encouraged to do your best. If you are struggling with a skill there's always someone to help you work it out. The work out is grueling, but so satisfying as you watch yourself get better every time you put on skates. I could go on and on, but if you're interested all I can say is try it for yourself. You won't be disappointed!!

Really, after eight years there is no distinction between derby memory and memory. These people are my people.

What is your most embarrassing roller derby memory?

Picture it...Birmingham, 2017. I'm jamming, coming around a curve with the opposing jammer close behind. My blocker, Slay, is hanging back from the pack, ready to take out the other jammer once I pass. The track is open, giving me a clear route to enter at the back of the pack...and I run smack into Slay and take us both out. It was like the episode of Bob's Burger's where Tina manages to hit the only car in a giant parking lot.

What is your most embarrassing roller derby memory?

My very first bout, my whole team ended up in the penalty box and I was the only blocker on the track. Shreddie Mercury was the jammer and I could not block her or hit her out because I was being held by Claw and Order the whole time. It was embarrassing.

Name:Mika

Occupation:AR Specialist

First Appearance:February 2017

Hometown:Birmingham

About Sammie:

How did you get into Roller Derby?

Ever since I found out roller derby was a thing, I've wanted to join. But I was always too busy, or assumed I wouldn't be strong enough or skilled enough to succeed at it. When a friend of mine told me she joined, I suddenly realized that Roller Derby was a real thing that normal humans could do, so why not give it a shot? I'm glad I did.

What is your best roller derby memory?

It was probably my second or third practice ever, and I really felt like I wasn't cut out for derby. I refused to give up or sit out, and ended up pushing myself too far and pulled my right quad so bad I couldn't stand. I was so mad at myself for getting hurt, that I didn't know what to do. Then T-Nacity came over to check on me and make sure I was OK. She saw how upset I was and said, "I know you feel like you're alone right now, but you're not. We all hurt ourselves all the time: you'll recover, and when you do you're welcome to come back." It just made me realize that this team was made up an amazing supportive group of women, and it was the moment I really bought in and knew if I just kept coming to practice, I'd get where I wanted to be.

What is your most embarrassing roller derby memory?

One of the first times I got picked to jam during a practice drill, I got so worked up about it that I tripped over my own toe stops before I even made it to the pack and fell so hard I had a bruise for a month.

What was your first bout like?

It was terrifying and exciting and I really felt like a fish out of water. Everyone just kept telling me what I did well, and what I needed to work on, so I felt accepted and learned a lot. There's a video of me somewhere where I'm all alone on the line (everyone else was in the box, or behind offense) and I'm just getting low and whipping my head back and forth like a terrified duck trying to catch Catt, then, Catt just skates right past me as easy as anything. I was disappointed at the time, but it's pretty funny to watch, and things can only get better from here, right?

What are some of your other hobbies?

Plays keyboard for Sister Sniffle, a Birmingham based twee-jangle-garage-lowfi-pop band, and is otherwise happy to read all the books, play dystopian video games, eat delicious grilled cheeses, and enjoy the occasional round of disc golf. Loves to travel abroad and embark on wilderness hikes whenever the opportunity presents itself.

About DMoe:

How did you get into Roller Derby?

I competitively roller figure skated as a child (yes that's a thing), and since stopping, I had missed skating like crazy. I was always wanting to go skating, but no one I knew was super interested. One night I was scrolling Facebook, and I saw a photo of TCR's latest bout. Immediately curious, I got into the rabbit hole of research. I had NO idea what roller derby was, but I was determined to figure it out.. Then I saw that recruitment was happening that week, and basically dove in head first, not looking back. It was one of my best decisions ever. I love it. I love this team, and I love this sport.

What is your best roller derby memory?

Probably the first jam of my first bout. I was so, so nervous. But that melted away when the first whistle blew, and it was so. much. fun.

What is your most embarrassing roller derby memory?

I haven't had anything truly mortifying yet, but I know it's coming. And now that I've said that.. any day now.

What was your first bout like?

I was extraordinarily nervous. I had just been skating for about 2.5 months, and I didn't know if I was ready, but... there I was on the roster. I don't remember much about that bout, but I remember loving pretty much every second of it once it started. I felt so proud and excited to be a part of this team. I'll never forget the remarks of encouragement from my teammates - that meant more than they will ever know.

What are some of your other hobbies?
